Any Survival Backpack kit , (also known as a BOB, Get Out of Dodge Bag, GOOD, or 72 Hour Bag or even BOB Bag) is normally designed to allow you to get away from an emergency scenario and permit you to survive self-contained for up to 3 days. Many individuals organize their Bug Out Bag to support them for much longer than that, but there is a limit to what you are able to carry on your back plus a 3 day goal is a nice place to start.
Here are the 7 basic types of gear you will require for your own BOB Bag:
1. Water
Water Bottle It should go without saying that but I will say it anyway. Water is a survival basic for any situation. In a survival situation water easily gets to be the most valuable item.
1 Liter daily per person is truly the minimum amount. Simply put your 3 day Get Out Of Town pack should have at a minimum 3 liters of water.
To widen your capability or survive longer than a few days you need a water purification system. This could be simply by iodine tablets, boiling water or a water filter.
* You can work with a Collapsible Water Bottle for added backup.
* Make water collection easier using a Backpacking Bucket.
* Use Coffee Filters to extend the life of your water filtration system.
2. Food
Backpack Meals
For the 3 Day Bug Out Bag Content, Energy Bars and Backpack Meals is usually sufficient. Back pack meals are freeze
dried meals which you add boiling water to. Theses meals are light and have a long shelve life.
Obviously you must have a longer term food solution in any type of large area disaster, nevertheless for
your basic BOB Bag, backpack meals are a good set up.
3. Clothing
Your Bug Out Bag clothes ought to be similar to what you might pack for a weekend backpacking trip.
* A pair of long pants
* A pair of sturdy boots or shoes
* 2 Shirts (Maybe (1short sleeve and 1 long sleeve for layering)
* 2 Pairs of socks (ideally not cotton)
* A Jacket which is both warm and protects from rain
* Warm long underwear of some sort
* A Bandana (Thier are many uses for a Bandana)
* A hat
This list might possibly continue on for some time and many people would not dream of having a Bug Out Bag
without twice that amount, however in a pinch that arrangement could get a person by for 3 days.
4. Shelter
Tarp Tent
If you are going to survive for 3 days you're likely to need protection from the elements and a warm dry spot to snooze. You need no less than:
1. Some type of tent or tarp and a means to set it up
2. Some sort of ground tarp for beneath your shelter to keep dry (Never underestimate the importance of this)
3. Some type of Bedroll, preferably a good quality sleeping bag.
5. First Aid Kit
First Aid Kit Trying to address everything you need as part of your Bug Out Bag Content is another posting completely to itself, perhaps several more. I won’t attempt to cover it now due to the fact I would certainly leave something out.
What I can do is recommend that you construct your own Emergency First Aid Kit rather than buying one of those prepackaged first aid kits that claim to contain 1001 items to enable you to get through any emergency. While many are alright, if you ask me these types of kits are often loaded with a great deal of items you will be unlikely to require instead of an ample amount of the items you will likely want a lot of.
Plus, building your own personal first aid kit gives you an intimate knowledge of exactly what it contains and how to utilize it. How many people purchase one of those pre-made set ups and just guess they are prepared because there’s so much crap in it there must be what I need?
6. Basic Gear
Matches Basic Gear seems repetitive but it is my group for the things you absolutely cannot live without but don’t really fit well into another category. A lot of survivalists will not like this list because it is not exhaustive by any means, but again Let me say: It can be adequate to get you through for a few days.
Rain Gear - at least 2 ways to keep dry in the rain. Poncho as well as Jacket are good coupled with your Tent/Shelter
Fire - A bare minimum of 3 different ways to produce fire. I'll have more on this soon in a new post.
You’re also want something to cut your firewood and a knife uses an excessive amount of energy long term: Choose the best survival saw you fell safe with. Again more on this topic later.
Cooking - The minimum for cooking is a small pot or a large cup to boil water in for both drinking and freeze dried meals. A compact backpacking stove and fuel are superior.
Light - At least 2 reliable flashlights and a backup set of batteries for each.
Survival Knife - Essentially the most used and most versatile tool in your Bug Out Bag. I know here it is again. I will have more on the Survival Knife later
7. Weapons
The simple fact is you are likely to be dealing with a No Rule of Law” circumstance, or near to it, and people could very well do crazy things. Being ready to protect oneself is portion of the survivalist mindset.
Certainly a gun of some sort is ideal for this. (However not in all circumstances) I will not go into details about what type of gun you need to bring since that is fiercely disputed and really a individual choice. Take what is comfortable to you.
Outside of firearms your survival knife could be used as weapon if you had to. Also something as simple as a big walking stick or club can be a powerful discouraging factor for bad guys. It’s all about supplying yourself options.
Once you have these basics covered you'll be ready to test and refine your Bug Out Bag Content with other valuable gear and prepare it for longer term survival situations.
